In 1979, Ann Burgess and Lynda Holmstrom published several first-personĪccounts of rape in their groundbreaking book, ''Rape: Crisis and Recovery.'' My own 1985 book, ''Recovery: How to Survive Sexual Assault,'' included dozens of first-person accounts of rape by women Rape first came to public attention as a women's issue in the early 1970's precisely because of such first-person accounts, known as rape speak-outs, which were published in books like ''Against Rape,''īy Andra Medea and Kathleen Thompson, and ''Rape: The First Sourcebook for Women,'' by Noreen Connell and Cassandra Wilson, both issued in 1974. That said, however, I must take exception to his statement that ''there are few published first-person accounts of the experience of being sexually pillagedĪnd its aftermath.
